When a merged piece is captured, you will lose both pieces. In the photo above, losing the white merged piece will lose both knight and root.
How to move merge pieces? There are a few possibilities:
1) move as merged piece
2) move just the knight to split merged piece back to 2 chess pieces
3) move just the rook to split merged piece back to 2 chess pieces
